Urban planning
Strategy and plan of Nyhamnen, Malmö
Suggested plan over a small part of the post-industrial waterfront site of Nyhamnen in Malmö, currently in pre-development by the municipalty of the city.

The group focused on temporality and the different stages of how to develop the site. Because of the sites huge size it was crucial to understand and work with key site features.

Nyhamnen is a post-industrial fenced area in the city's northern outskirts. It is not commonly visited by many, so an important aspect was to analyze the sites potential access points and connections to the rest of the city. This is why the group chose to focus on a smaller part of the entire site, which was closest to more populated nearby areas.

To the sites advantage lies the central train station just a few hundred meters away, and a bridge connection to the populated University site makes it accessible by walking distances. A buss stop is located next to the site which makes it well connected with other points in the city.

The Site Plan contains information about the suggested development of the area. The concept was to create a more usable and open enviroment to bring more life to the place. By doing this we established a necessary connection between the city and the remaining area of Nyhamnen.

The waterfront combined with the post-industrial buildings create an urban space which is can not be found anywhere else in the city. Focusing on keeping and reusing several parts of already existing structures as well integrating the water as a part of the site, we are able to create a truly unique and interesting urban enviroment.

By exploring temporality the group discussed how to be able to design a plan adapted for change. This is expressed in the restrain of planning for bigger engagements at the site. Many structures is planned to be reused, just with a different use.

A current housing crisis is present in the country, which justifies planning for housing as well. Combining this with the concept of temporality we concluded that some form of temporary housing units would be best suited. Since the waterfront is practically unused the group suggested implementing transportable house boats. These are planned to be able to move between different coastal cities where the need is the most urgent.
The proposition includes three stages. The park, designed first for attracting more activity to the site. The waterfront, designed to connect the quays as well as making the water more suitable for recreation purposes such as bathing. And lastly, the housing boats, to help with the urge of developing more housing.
